*PRESENT: Mark Schall, Darrell Davies, Chip Krieger, Brad VanAmberg, Mike Abernathy and Jim Kelly
*INSURANCE: Mark revisited Team Insurance which has been discussed in Managers meetings and previous BOD meetings. Jim reported that a discussion with NC ASA Commissioner Tony Laws, found there have been, to the best of his knowledge, no claims presented against a team manager as a result of a player injury. After a discussion of the $149 annual per team (with signed waivers) premium, it was decided that the cost and potential exposure would not justify the expense. A motion by Mark and seconded by Jim was unanimous as to NOT purchasing the coverage. The current spectator insurance required by both NH County and The City of Wilmington will be replaced by Bollinger Insurance. The new policy comes with a modest premium saving and is the coverage recommended by ASA.
*WAIVERS: A sample copy of an individual player waiver recommended by ASA was adopted, subject to editing to include WSSA verbiage. The waiver editing and inclusion on the WSSA player registration form was assigned to Brad and is currently on the web site.
*TEAM ACCOUNT BALANCES: A previous motion to use a portion of team balances for subsidization of State and National teams was rescinded.
*STATE & NATIONAL TEAM SUBSIDIZATION: A motion by Mark, seconded by Mike to discontinue the practice of subsidizing State and National Teams from the WSSA budget was approved unanimously. The practice of the use of all member’s dues to benefit only select players was felt to be not in keeping with the proper and intended use of funds for ALL WSSA members.
*BUDGET/FINANCIALS: The board acknowledged the expertise brought to the position of Treasurer by Brad. The current financials as shown on the web site were approved. The reduction of member dues from $100 annually to $85 annually was approved due to the existing league balance and non-recurring expenses.
*UMPIRES: Mark has continued, and the BOD concurs, with the current financial arrangement with our umpires with the caveat that reporting of the attendance of the umpires be part of the team manager’s responsibilities to insure proper credit.
*OPEN POSITIONS: Current Atlantic Division President, Darrell is presently in discussion with an individual considering running to replace him at the end of his term. Additionally, team manager candidates for the Atlantic Division, Reggie Brew and Ed Maikowski will be placed into nomination at the February membership meeting along with Greg Romero nominated for Coastal Division Secretary, replacing Jim. The above nominations were approved unanimously.
*BY-LAW AMENDMENT: In view of the league joining the ASA and with voluntary compliance with ASA’s rules and regulations, alongside of specific WSSA rules and By-Laws, the wording of this inclusion requires By-Law member approval. The specific wording will be presented for approval at the February meeting.
*ALTERED BATS: ASA rules deal specifically with the penalties levied as a result of the use, ownership and/or introduction of altered bats into league play including practices. It was noted that the penalties are severe and are in addition to any legal remedies that may be sought by an injured player, official or spectator.
Next meeting: Monday February 8, 2016, 11:00 at the Break Time Grille
